Post Caps Development Camp Interviews

After the final scrimmage of the Capitals Annual Development Camp at Kettler Capitals Ice Plex, I caught a few player interviews and asked Caps radio play by play star, John Walton a few questions. Here they are:

I was lucky enough to catch John Walton in the lobby and he was willing to answer a few questions. He was on his way out and wanted to get to his family so I made sure I didn't keep him from that:

Garrett Haar talks about leaving Western Michigan University and going to play in the Western Hockey Leauge:
Here is Caps prospect Riley Barber answering a few questions:
Local Washington DC player invitee Sam Anas:

I was able to record an interview of Tom Wilson and ask him a few questions myself but it was longer and exceeded the allowed download limit so I'll transcribe it here:

"It's always good to get back here. Everytime I come into Washington its a pretty special. It's an amazing place and the fans today were so welcoming and it's a lot of fun."

On being the biggest guy on the ice at the camp:

"I think Mike Cajkovsky might be a little bit taller. I was making his life a little hectic every chance I could so, he's a pretty solid d man. Its cool to get out here agianst the different levels of talent and different systems guys come from. Its a pretty special week and its cool to get to know the guys"

On playing against better defenseman:

"It's awesome. I have been here a couple times and it's a little bit different when you are in here with guys coming from college and junior and stuff. It's a special time anytime you get to walk into these doors."

On using Ovechkin's staal and whether he left goals for Ovi or Ovi left goals for him:

"I'm sure I left them for him I think. I'm excited to watch him next season and he was good to me when I was here."

"The college guys are always fit and they come in here and work hard here and in their gyms. They don't play that many games so they are in the gym a lot. Its the college lifestyle and their system. I saw they are all pretty solid back there. I got to go up against Carrick and Cajkovsky for most of the week and those are two solid guys. It was good for me, its good for my development to come into a camp like this."

On if Connor Carrick can make the NHL one day:

"He has a bright future. He gets better and better., He was huge for us on the backend in Plymouth. I think fans should be excited about what he brings to the table. He's a good puck moving defenseman and he has some flash and is good in his own zone."

On what he should take away from this camp:

"I need to always get bigger and stronger. Thats my go to answer. It's the next level, it's the fastest league in the world. Most the guys are the strongest guys in the world. Thats a huge thing for me as a 19 year old to be able to battle with guys like John Erskine and every team has a big defeseman like that. Its important to stay healthy and work hard."

On teaching the inexperienced guys:

"I had Burakovsky rooming with me all week. He's a good kid. I tried to show him the way. A year ago, this week I hadn't seen the room, I hadn't seen anything. It was a lot different for me coming in here now its all familiarand that's huge. I'm just trying to help any of the guys I can."

On if he and Burakovsky might play together in the future:

"That would be an honor to play with him. He's pretty skilled. I don't know if we will ever play together but that would be pretty cool. I'll work on getting him the puck and making room for him, thats for sure."

On if he liked playing with Burakovsky:

"This is just the horizon for him. I mean he has so much skill. He has a huge future ahead of him."

On head coach Adam Oates:

"I'm just listening to everything he says. He is one of the best hockey minds out there. He is unbelieveable, so, anything he says is for a reason. You can see that with the guys this year. They started out a little slow but once they bought into the system they started to really play some good hockey."

During the Steven Oleksy press conference today I asked who he thought could best fill the void left by Matt Hendricks departure. Oleksy gave a lot of praise to Aaron Volpatti to fill Hendricks role.

Hope you enjoyed the audio and as always, follow me on twitter at @whirsch_wvunews for further hockey talk and news!

Until Next Time,
